Design and Realization of a Highly-Compact Tubular Linear Actuator for a Novel Total Artificial Heart

The shuttle pump is a novel implantable total artificial heart (TAH) concept based on Linear-Rotary Actuator (LiRA) and currently under development at the Power Electronic Systems Laboratory, ETH Zurich in close partnership with Charité Berlin Medical University of Vienna. This paper presents analysis, design realization ShuttlePump Linear (LA) part, which necessary to provide about 45 N axial actuation force. Design criteria are minimization volume generated power losses winding, could result excess heating and/or blood damage, i.e. protein denaturation aggregation. LA implemented as Tubular (TLA) maximize active area for linear/axial force generation. After preliminary analysis first principles, TLA optimized detail aid FEM simulations. experimental measurements conducted realized prototype verify simulation results confirm suitability TAH.
